Highland Lakes hoops teams will be in district play Friday
BURNET COUNTY — Area basketball teams return to action Friday. Some will continue district play, while another will begin division play.
And all have the highest of expectations.
The Burnet High School girls basketball team (10-11) will host Liberty Hill 6:45 p.m. Friday in The Doghouse, 1000 The Green Mile in Burnet.
Both teams are expected to compete for the District 25-3A title along with Lampasas.
Liberty Hill and Burnet were each at the Class 3A Region I Tournament in February. Both lost to Abilene Wylie, which was the Class 3A state runner-up.
But since then, several Lady Dawgs have graduated.
The team is led by junior guards Kati Maldonado and Leah Cotton, who average about 13 points a contest.
Liberty Hill is 16-5.
Meanwhile, the Marble Falls High School girls basketball team (8-16, 2-1) return to District 25-4A play when the Lady Mustangs host Leander Rouse (8-17, 2-2) 7 p.m. Friday at Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls.
The Lady Mustangs are coming off a 66-42 setback to Cedar Park High (4-0), an opponent head coach Stephanie Gamble said she thought was the best team in the division.
Meanwhile, Rouse defeated Dripping Springs, 35-31, in overtime Tuesday where the Lady Raiders scored seven points to the Lady Tigers’ three.
The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team (9-12, 0-1) will travel to face Rouse (11-10, 0-2) Friday, 3301 S. Bagdad Road in Cedar Park.
The Mustangs lost to Cedar Park High, 48-43, where they missed about 15 layups. Trailing, 24-22, with two minutes left in the half, the Timberwolves went on a 5-2 run to give them the cushion they needed to ensure the victory.
Rouse was down, 25-7, to Dripping Springs after the first quarter and never recovered.
The Faith Academy girls basketball team (19-2, 1-0) will welcome Bulverde Bracken to The Fire Pit at the campus, three miles east of Marble Falls off RR 1431.
The Lady Flames haven’t lost a district game in four years, pushing their winning streak to 47 straight after crushing Austin Hill Country, 52-17, Tuesday.
