Roland Dewayne Smith
Roland Dewayne Smith, 69, of Burnet, died March 8, 2010. He was born in Burnet Nov. 3, 1940, to James Milton Smith and Flora Belle (Brown) Smith.
He was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Burnet, along with his brother and sisters, by the Rev. Pond. His family is well-known in the area, where they all attended Burnet schools, along with numerous relatives and friends still living in the Burnet and Marble Falls region.
He was a veteran of the Air Force and Air Force Reserve. He attended Central Texas College, both in Austin and in Killeen; Concordia College, The University of Texas at Austin, Air University in Alabama and The University of Texas at San Antonio. He was named in “Who’s Who in Nursing” 1992-1993 as one of the top 100 clinicians in the United States by the Society of Professional Nurses. His duties over the years included those of nurse consultant, director of nurses, house supervisor and staff positions.
He kept in touch with family and friends over the years. He loved working in his yard with his “green thumb” and all his fruit trees and plants. He took on one of Sherwood Shores III Hoover’s Valley “Problem Childs” and gave it new life with paint, flowers, repairs, landscaping, new roof, new porch and a new attitude.
He was proud of the way this Problem Child turned out.
Survivors include his brother J.T. Smith of Round Mountain; and sisters Ella Morgan of West and Myrtle Cantwell of Thorndale; eight nieces; and 11 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Frank Smith, of Frank Smith Trucking.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. today at the Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet, with Ricky Guenther officiating.
