Lady Dawgs’ defense buries Manor
BURNET — Burnet girls junior varsity basketball coach Doug Messer called it a “turkey ugly” start but said the Lady Dawgs dressed it up with defense for a 58-31 win over Manor at The Doghouse Dec. 2.
“We looked really sluggish early due to the holiday break,” Messer said. “The first quarter was about as ugly a basketball quarter as you can imagine.”
Burnet sputtered to a 6-3 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter, the defense held the Lady Mustangs to seven points and keyed a 19-point Lady Dawg eruption providing a comfortable 25-10 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Manor turned the one-sided game into a standoff with their speed, racing down-court for easy transition baskets. While Manor managed 12 points, Burnet met the challenge with 13 to retain the advantage, 38-22. A 20-10 blowout in the final period thrust the Lady Dawgs to a 26-point victory.
