BURNET — The Burnet Middle School seventh-grade boys A team beat Wimberley Dec. 4, 36-21.

From the opening tip the Texans were just outmatched by the Bullpups, coaches said.  Burnet took the first basket of the game and never looked back.

The Bullpups jumped to a 12-0 lead before Wimberley ever scored.

“Excellent defense helped jump-start the team early and it carried over through the remainder of the game,” coach Kenneth Bauer said.

Derek Kiser, Price Carpenter, Trey Smith and Walker Townes all had great backcourt play, the coach said, and helped set the tone of the game with several steals and great defensive pressure.

Blayne Parisher, Shane Williams and Nick Stevenson shut down the paint with great aggressive defense, Bauer said, and Trenton Hafley, Chase Mardis and Logan Knight controlled the boards.

“The Bullpups made a lot of progress during this game, and showed the potential they possess,” the coach said.  “The Bullpups could have poured it on but choose to play back to work on running our offense and improving on man defense.”

Hafley led all scores with 16 points, while Parisher added five. Mardis and Knight each scored four, and Smith and Kiser had two, while Townes and Williams each dropped in one.

“I am proud of the way these young men played and came together as a team,” Bauer said. “I believe this team is starting to grow and mature into the team they are capable of.”

Burnet improved to 4-2 for the year and 2-1 in district play.
