Late rally by Revelle does not overcome Dripping Springs lead
Revelle dribbled through the Tiger defense for 17 points and brought the Bulldogs within five points in the final quarter but Burnet never fully defrosted to overcome the hot shooting Dripping Springs squad. The Bulldogs dropped the decision 45-55.
“We shot the ball at only 31 percent from inside the three-point line so we have to do a better job of scoring,” said Burnet coach Roy Kiser. “Our posts have to continue to take good shots, knowing that they will fall eventually. Dripping Springs is a well-balanced, well-coached team that understands how to play defense, so give credit to them for that.”
With Burnet opening the game in a hustling zone, the Tigers drilled three from outside the arc. Denton, the 6-foot 8-inch Bulldog post, answered with a block, aggressive board play and a quick turnaround jumper while teammate Ben Cardozo delivered a power shot inside and two free throws to keep Burnet close at 6-9 at the first quarter’s end.
John Melvin hit a three-pointer at the top of the second period to knot the score at nine apiece. Dripping Springs responded with two more three-pointers to mount a 15-point run. Burnet struck for seven points on shots by Cardozo, Wilkes and another by Melvin, but the Bulldogs missed 16 and lagged behind at intermission, 16-24.
In the third quarter, Burnet went scoreless for the first four minutes before Revelle took over for the Bulldogs. The floor general took to the basket, dropping in a bucket and adding eight consecutive free throws after being fouled on his attempts. The deficit after three quarters was 26-38.
Revelle, with scoring help from Stewart Berg, Melvin, Denton and Tyler Scott, engineered a rally that brought the Bulldogs within five points with 1:21 remaining. Burnet deployed their full-court press but was not able to create any additional scoring opportunities.
Melvin finished with nine points followed by Cardozo with seven. Denton and Scott were credited with three points each while both Berg and Wilkes added two apiece. Burnet dropped to a 1-3 record.
