Marble Falls library offers after-school fun
MARBLE FALLS — Activities at the Marble Falls Public Library will keep area students hopping between homework assignments, including the XTREME Kids game card.
Students visiting the library at 101 Main St. can pick up a game card, complete it and return it by Sept. 29 to qualify to win a Wal-Mart gift card. A drawing for this and other prizes will be held the same day from 6–7 p.m. at the Pep Rally.
Students must be present to win.
The Pep Rally is the last of four Monday evening events recognizing Marble Falls elementary schools. Each is from from 6–7 p.m. and begins with Cool Colt Kids Sept. 8, followed by Marvelous Marble Falls night on Sept. 15, High Energy Highland Lakes Kids night Sept. 22 and finally, the Pep Rally Sept. 29.
From now through the end of September, students will be given a raffle ticket for a prize of their choice with each book they finish reading. The young readers must also inform librarians Eileen Smith or Mary Jackson what books they have completed.
Another way to win is to write a book review.
“If you write a book review, put your name on it and give it to a staff member,” said children’s librarian Eileen Smith. “You will receive another ticket to deposit in the jar marked with the prize you want to win.”
Tickets will be drawn Sept. 29 and students must be present to win.
For students who want to participate, but don’t have a library card, September is also Library Card Sign Up Month.
“These events are a great opportunity for students to get a card,” Smith said.
Smith is also starting a book club for children in fourth and fifth grades.
“Students (in these grades) are invited to come to the new book club organizational meeting on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m. at the Marble Falls library,” Smith said. “At this meeting we will decide on the best time and day for the club to meet, how often we should meet and the kind of books children want to read.”
Smith said this is the first-ever book club for fourth and fifth graders.
“I would be so happy to have a few kids who enjoy reading and want to get together and share,” Smith said. “I want them to know how important they are and that their view of a book is significant.”
