BUCHANAN DAM — Proceeds from a fajita dinner at the Buchanan Dam Community Center will help offset the building’s maintenance and repair costs, officials said.

The dinner is from 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the center, also known as the Red Barn. It is located at 2403 Texas 261, just 1.5 miles off Texas 29.

“It’s a fundraiser for the community center building to help keep it going. What we’re trying to do is get more people interested in renting out the building and increase the utilization of the facility,” resident Joel Dupree said.

Dupree is the building’s treasurer and a member of a three-person board that oversees operation and maintenance.

“Our goal is to get money by way of fundraising. We don’t like being low on funds, and this year we have had insurance costs and a number of repairs,” Dupree said.

The building has new water heaters and a new air-conditioning system. The cost of those repairs were $1,900 in addition to a $2,700 insurance premium required to cover the use of the facility.

“We’re trying to cover all the expenses. We have a great facility here that has everything we need, but we could do more with it, and we need more people to help us,” he said.

Dupree said the building is 18 years old and consists of one large and one small meeting room that can seat 250 people. The Lions Club and a crafts club are just two of the groups currently meeting there.

Tickets for the fajita dinner are being sold for $10, $9 in advance and children 12 and under are $5. To purchase a ticket or for more details, call Dupree at (512) 793-6329.
