COTTONWOOD SHORES — The Hill Country Community Theatre will kick off its 24th season with generous helpings of laughter, slapstick and . . . cross dressing.

All three will be available in abundance during the Sept. 18 opening of “Leading Ladies,” another popular comedy by renowned playwright Ken Ludwig, who also wrote another HCCT favorite, “Lend Me A Tenor.”

“We have a really great cast for this fast-paced farce,” theater Executive Director Jim McDermott said. “And what a great way to kick off our 24th season and help propel us to our goal of 700 season members.”

Theater veterans Mark Fernandes of Granite Shoals and Glen Bird of Burnet portray a pair of down-on-their-luck English actors performing Shakespeare at a series of local lodges in Pennsylvania’s Amish country. When the duo catches wind of a dying rich widow prepared to leave her fortune to her long-lost nephews, they resolve to weasel their way into the will.

There’s a catch, however: The heirs are actually heiresses, meaning the actors will have to don skirts and curls in order to pull off the heist.

Fernandes and Bird join fellow HCCT vets Priscilla Castenada, Jennifer Holland, Brian Jacobs, Mike Brittain, Mary Beth Madsen and McDermott. The play will be directed by Toni Rysdam-Shorre of Horseshoe Bay.

The box office opens Sept. 8 for HCCT members and Sept. 11 for the public, with tickets $15 for adults and $7 for children under 16.

The play begins with a gala opening 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 with performances following every Thursday – Sunday through Oct. 5.

Call (830) 798-8944 for tickets. The 147-seat playhouse is located at 4003 FM 2147.
