Lady Mustangs fall to Stevens
“We missed a lot of easy putbacks,” she said. “It was one of many. We missed tons of easy buckets.”
Stevens won, 50-49. Marble Falls is now 7-4 overall and on a two-game losing streak.
Both teams matched each other point for point. But in the closing seconds with Marble Falls trailing, it looked like the Lady Mustangs were going to escape with the victory.
“We had a chance to win it at the end,” Gamble said. “We had a good look at a layup. It was a great look and a great layup. We shot it with the wrong hand. It was blocked by the rim.”
The reason, she said, is because her players need to focus better.
“We’re not concentrating on putting it in,” she said. “It started with the shoot around (Wednesday).”
She is concerned about how the Lady Mustangs are taking care of the ball, Gamble said.
Marble Falls recorded 19 turnovers in the loss to Stevens, and while the coach did not know how many points Stevens scored off the turnovers, Gamble did know one fact:
“It led to missed opportunities for us,” she added.
The contest wasn’t all bad for Marble Falls, Gamble said.
She was pleased with the Lady Mustangs’ rebounding.
“In the second, third and fourth quarters, we did a good job blocking out,” she said. “We just didn’t score.”
She was pleased with the team’s execution and the players’ defensive intensity.
“We got in their faces,” Gamble said. “We just couldn’t throw it in the ocean.”
Lindsay Ansley had 16 points, followed by Diana Fonseca with nine, Katie Mosher added eight, and Katy Cooke dropped in six.
The Lady Mustangs played their six games in seven days and went 3-3 in those contests.
They beat Manor, San Marcos and Plainview in their own American Bank of Texas Tournament last weekend at Marble Falls High School.
But they lost to Cedar Park at the tournament, Georgetown Nov. 24 and Stevens.
Gamble said she did not think fatigue played a factor in the defeat to Stevens.
“We blocked out and played great defense,” she said. “When you’re tired, you don’t play great defense. It was just a matter of focus.”
The Lady Mustangs took a break during the Thanksgiving holiday. They will travel to play Austin McCallum Tuesday at 8 p.m.
