Bullpups beat Llano for first district win
“What a game,” coach Jack Camplain said. “We played a tough and physical Llano team and although it was a tough game, we came out on top.”
The Bullpups are 1-0 in district play.
Burnet scored only eight points in the first period, but a Dauber connected on a bucket for the Bullpups, Camplain said. Burnet led, 10-7.
“We had missed several layups and our defense was not up to par,” Camplain said. “We started the second quarter and our defense picked up. We had several steals but were unable to turn them into points.”
Burnet still led, 19-12, at the half.
“When we began the third quarter the intensity of our play really picked up,” the coach said. “On defense we only allowed five points and our offensive output exploded.”
Burnet scored 18 points for a 37-17 lead.
“In the fourth we slowed the game down and let the clock run,” Camplain said.
Burnet scored six points to Llano’s five.
R.J. Vanwagenen led the way with 12 points, 10 steals and made both his free throws. Weston Ramos added 10 points and five steals. Zach Evans scored five points and four steals, while Spencer Ray scored four points and two steals and Frederick Schmidt dropped in four points, one steal and three blocked shots. Nick Foster added two points and three steals while Alonzo Torres had two points and one steal.
“Overall I am very proud of the team’s performance,” Camplain said. “They played a very good game and played physical. There were several times when one of the players dove on the floor to get a loose ball. They all displayed great hustle and enthusiasm.”
