Lady Ponies win home opener

“It was an exciting night in middle school girls basketball,” coach Karen Naumann said. “The Lady Ponies got to open their seventh-grade basketball career in a brand new facility.”

Hill Country scored the first two baskets in the first 30 seconds, Naumann said, so she called a timeout.

“To settle the girls down and remind them what they were running, and then Hill Country never got the lead again,” she said.

Marble Falls outscored Hill Country in every quarter. The Lady Ponies took a 12-4 lead in the first period and never looked back.

“I thought the girls did a great job running their fast break and working together as a team,” the coach said. “They had a lot of new plays to remember and execute and I felt that they did a great job for their first game.”

Sarah Stripling had 12 points followed by Haley Stephens with 10. Haley Coulter added nine, while Blanca Fonseca scored four, Tiffany Winters had three, and Skylar Riley and Amanda Thomas each had two points.

Offensive standouts were Stripling, Stephens and Coulter, while defensive standouts included Fonseca and Riley.

“I am very proud of these girls and how well they listened and worked together as a team,” the coach said. “I am looking forward to a great season and very excited about the potential for a successful basketball program in the future.”

Marble Falls won both the seventh-grade contests and eighth-grade games.

“The Lady Ponies set the tradition on a brand new floor with four victories,” Naumann said. “It was awesome to start the season with four wins on our brand new floor. I hope this will be the start of a winning tradition for many years to come.”
