Lady Flames score twin wins at tourney
Faith beat Comfort High School, 54-31, and Blanco High School, 56-40.
“We had a good day against two decent teams,” coach Jerry English said. “We were real scrappy.”
The Lady Flames have boosted their season record to 6-2, a pleasant surprise to English because the team has such young talent. The 13-girl squad has one senior, Katie Jung, three juniors and nine underclassmen, including freshman post Brooke Field.
“Brooke had an outstanding second game (against Blanco),” English said, “with 12 points and 15 rebounds.”
Another Field played one of her best games as well, according to English.
“Kendra (Field) was superb. She had her best games, getting 23 points against Comfort and 30 points against Blanco,” English said.
After some encouragement from the coach, the older Field has produced more than 25 points in the last five games.
“We had an interesting talk,” English said, after a game where Field produced eight points. Since then, she has scored as many as 37 points in a single game.
Growing pains aside, English said he is “very pleased” with his young squad. One area they continue to develop is “finishing inside with our big girls,” he said, but even then the Lady Flames aren’t letting age or lack of experience deter them.
“Our actual entry passes to our big girls are a pleasant surprise because our outside girls are young,” the coach said.
The Lady Flames fared well against two University Interscholastic League teams in the tournament. According to English, Johnson City and Faith were the only two non-UIL teams present. Faith faces another UIL team Dec. 2 when they travel to Cherokee High School.
The Lady Flames play their next game Monday at home against Fredericksburg Heritage at 6 p.m.
