Bulldogs to rely on talented returners

This year, as a senior and the only skyscraper on the squad, he will be “the man,” the post in the middle who will be counted on heavily as an inside threat, a strong rebounder and defensive intimidator. The relentless 6-foot 6-inch first team all-district post will lead a solid corps of versatile players into the hardwood battles in District 8-3A.

“We look forward to the move to 3A, but understand that there are some great programs and coaches to compete against,” said Bulldogs head coach Roy Kiser. “Liberty Hill, Wimberley and Fredericksburg appear to be the favorites in the district.”

Because of reclassification earlier this year, Burnet was moved to Class 3A from Class 4A by the University Interscholastic League based on a high school’s enrollment.

If Kiser stays true to his nature as expected, the Bulldogs will play high-pressure defense for the duration of the game and run the break on every possession. With a good blend of veterans and newcomers that includes six seniors and six juniors on the roster, Burnet appears to have all the weapons to make a serious dent in their new Hill Country district.

Along with Denton, Kiser will have the services of 5-10 senior guard Zakk Revelle, a second team all-district selectee a year ago who also was the team’s Fighting Heart Award winner.

Junior post Tyler Scott and senior forward Aaron Doucet return for their second varsity seasons. Garret Wilkes, a 6-2 junior forward, Matt Breneman, a 5-10 senior guard, and Ben Cardozo,  6-4.5 post player, round out the returning lettermen.

Newcomers include a pair of 6-3 juniors, John Melvin and Chaston Hall. Garrett Rowe, a senior post at 6-2.5, has joined the varsity squad as has 6-0 senior guard Stewart Berg and 5-11 senior David Sorrells.

The Bulldogs take on the Taylor Ducks Friday in their home opener at 8 p.m.

They travel to Lampasas Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. game.

The Bulldogs have eight scheduled contests including the Bulldog Classic Dec. 5-6 before District 8-3A competition begins Jan. 2 at Llano.
