Bullpups finish their season at 3-4

BURNET — The Burnet Middle School eighth-grade white football team finished the season with a loss to Mountain Valley, 42-6, Oct. 30. The Bullpups finished the season 3-4 overall.

Burnet played without seven starters, and five had injuries.

Mountain Valley scored on a big play on each touchdown.

The first two touchdowns were for 60 yards and 45 yards. The third was an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown, while the fourth was for a 50-yard touchdown pass. The last two scores were on runs of 40 yards or more.

Coach Randall Alford said the Bullpups moved the ball but  could not complete the third and short plays to keep several drives alive.

In the fourth quarter Burnet mounted a drive of 85 yards, the coach said, with Ryan Wylie doing most of the work with several runs of over 10 yards or more.

The drive was capped on a short pass to Michael Y’Barra, who made a nifty move to cover the last 15 yards. The extra-point attempt failed.

The defense was led by Cody Letterman with four tackles, while Thomas Rhames and Ryan Wylie each had three. Jordan Barnard had one pass knocked down. Matthew Guzman had one sack for the Bullpups.

Wylie and Y’Barra subbed in for the injured Aaron Johns, and injured Zach Robles did the rushing honors for the White team.

Wylie carried the ball 15 times for 105 yards, while Y’Barra had six rushes for 28 yards.

Jai Patel led the receivers with four catches out of five attempts for 38 yards. Y’Barra had three receptions out of five attempts for 30 yards and one touchdown. Colby Walker had two catches for five attempts for 36 yards, Quaid Collins had one catch in two tries for 20 yards and Wylie had one catch for one attempt for five yards.

Nic Melvin completed 11 of 18 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown.

“The white team had an up-and-down year, but with a great offseason should compete well next year as freshmen,” Alford said.

Season highlights were beating Marble Falls and Fredericksburg and coming back to beat Hudson Bend despite several key injuries, the coach said.

The managers were Nic Foster, Jeremy Jordan, William Gilmore, Derek Baker and Curtis Parker. Announcers and clock keepers were Wayne Cody and  Ed Hopkins. Videographers were Brittney Nix and Jeni Trader. Assistant coaches included Jack Camplain, Kenneth Bauer, Glen Hafley and Lance Matt.
