Bulldogs perform well at swim meet

AUSTIN – The Burnet High School boys and girls swim teams competed at the 2008 Austin Independent School District Capital City Swim Classic Nov. 7 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

The two teams combined to place 15th with 40 points out of 32 area schools. The boys’ team finished 10th with 38 points out of 26 schools, and the girls’ team finished 25th with two points.

The Bulldogs competed in the finals of 10 of 24 events. Sophomore Joe Robertson finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.95 seconds and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle final with a time of 1:57.87. Robertson was named Burnet’s male swimmer of the meet.

Also competing in finals were junior Eddy East, who finished 13th in the 200-yard free in 2:25.92; sophomore Jake Scott was eighth in 25.49 seconds and junior John Melvin finished 19th in 26.44 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. Other finishers included junior Andrew Hardison, who was 17th in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:11.62; Scott and Melvin finished 12th and 15th, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.79 seconds and 1:01.02. East finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:57.60. Sophomore Travis Justus finished 20th in the 100-yard breast stroke in 1:28.61.

The boys’ 200-yard medley relay team of Robertson, Justus, Hardison and Scott finished seventh in 2:02.39. The Bulldogs’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of East, freshman Zane McCartney, Justus and sophomore Andy Meyer finished 15th in 2:05.19.

Meyer also competed in boys diving, taking third place in the 1-meter springboard with 115.85 points.

The Lady Dawgs competed in the finals for six of the 24 events. Junior Tiffany Revay finished 12th, sophomore Rebekah Sorrells finished 20th and senior Kim Cornelius finished 26th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:35.59, 2:49.84 and 3:06.79, respectively. 

Burnet sent another trio of swimmers into a final event. Sophomore Tiffany Tolbert finished 44th, sophomore Kalee Smith finished 60th, and freshman Kristi Cornelius finished 62nd in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 34.63 seconds, 39.90 seconds and 40.91 seconds, respectively.

Sorrells and Tolbert finished 26th and 28th in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:15.73 and 1:16.22, respectively. Smith finished 30th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:45.10. 

The girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Sorrells, Kim Cornelius, Revay and Tolbert finished eighth in 5:04.44, and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Tolbert, Sorrells, Revay and sophomore Kirsten Whitfield finished ninth in 2:19.33. 

Junior Tiffany Revay was named Burnet’s female swimmer of the meet.
