Bullpups extend their winning streak

LAKE TRAVIS — The Burnet Middle School eighth-grade white football team defeated Hudson Bend, 26-18, Oct. 23 for the Bullpups’ third win in a row.

Hudson Bend was up, 6-0 at half, but the Bullpups mounted a furious rushing attack the second half to score four touchdowns and add one extra point to win the game, coaches said.

The first half found the Bullpups turning the ball over once and allowing Hudson Bend to complete several passes in a drive to score the only touchdown of the half with two minutes left.

The Bullpups started their offense at this point and drove down to the 10-yard line only to run out of time for the half, coaches said.

Burnet started the second half by stopping Hudson Bend and forcing them to go three-and-out with some tackling and pressure on the quarterback from Alonzo Torres, Jordan Barnard, Thomas Rhames and Brandon Kardow. Torres had four tackles for losses  and Rhames had two to help the defensive effort.

On the first possession of the second half, Aaron Johns ripped off a 30-yard run over his right side with blocking by Matt Guzman, Jamie Nesom and Frederick Schmidt and Colby Walker on the perimeter, coaches said.

After a 20-yard run by Johns for a touchdown was called back on a push in the back, the Bullpups ran a draw that saw Johns scoring from  30 yards out. The extra point was missed, but the score was knotted at 6.

Hudson Bend’s second possession was stopped cold by a tackle from Ryan Wiley, Jimmy Cauffman and Kardow, coaches said. The fourth-down try was halted, and the Bullpups started another quick drive with a 70-yard run by Robles around right end to put Burnet on top, 12-6. The snap was high and the extra point failed.

After a good defensive play from Austin Espisito and Guzman and a knock down pass from Jordan Barnard, the fourth quarter found the Pups on offense with Johns and Robles rushing the ball several times. Johns completed the drive with a 10-yard run. The extra-point attempt failed, but Burnet led, 18-6.

Hudson bend hit several passes to score, 18-12, with 4:29 to play. Burnet received the kickoff and on third down and three, Johns broke off left tackle behind Ty Johnson and Jai Patel  for a 65-yard run.

The extra-point attempt was successful and Burnet went up, 26-12. Some other tackles were by Michael Y’Barra, Cody Letterman, and Justin Calhoun.

Again Hudson Bend went to the air and scored in three plays but Alonzo Torres broke through the line to block the extra-point attempt and left the score, 26-18.

Hudson Bend opted to try the onside kick, and Ryan Wiley covered the ball for the Bullpups. Johns ran for 20 and Robles ran for 15 to put the ball on Hudson’s 10-yard line where Burnet elected to kneel the ball and notch its third win against three losses.

No football games are scheduled for the seventh and eighth grade. Instead, coaches will have the athletes play in intersquad scrimmages. The seventh-graders will play during the athletic period, while the eighth-graders will compete after school with the contest ending at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The Bullpups will return to the field Nov. 6. The seventh-graders will welcome Mountain Valley, while the eighth-graders will travel to face Mountain Valley. All games will begin at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
