Bulldogs make most of their sneak peak

FREDERICKSBURG — A sneak peek at the nearly complete cast of the top District 8-3A distance runners encouraged to Burnet High School cross-country coach Stuart Dixon and gave him a sense of good standing in the league.

The Oct. 22 Fredericksburg Invitational Meet was an opportunity for district athletes to run the Lady Bird Johnson Park course that will be the site of the district meet Wednesday. Every team in the district competed except Llano, which fielded only a partial team.

Considering a cold front that moved in with a challenging wind, “Things went well,” Dixon said. “Both teams (boys and girls) had good performances to help build confidence for next week’s district competition.”

The Lady Dawgs finished third in a field of five teams while the boys, running against eight teams, placed third as well.

“Everyone seems to be healthy and the race gave us a chance to run the course and get an idea of how we want to approach the course,” Dixon said. “We also got to see some district teams that we have not seen so far such as Ingram and Wimberley.”

Leading the Burnet girls’ squad was senior Jayme Wills, who medaled with a time of 13 minutes 23 seconds by placing 15th in the field of 43 runners in the 3,200-meter run. Lidia Rodriguez was 24th (14:04), sophomore Aimee Clendennen finished 25th (14:05), and freshman Kirsten Williamson was 26th (14:07).

Another trio of runners finishing together included Claire Carpenter, Nickia Ober and Andrea Clendennen. Also participating were seniors Liliana Ramirez and Tara Canty.

For the Bulldogs, it was the duo of sophomore Logan Neighbor and senior Tyson Denton who sparked a strong team finish.  Neighbor medaled with a seventh-place finish in 18:05 over the 5K course, while Denton won his medal at 11th place in 18:23. Freshman Ivan Palacios came in 23rd with teammate Garrett Rowe finishing right on his heels at 25th.

“Garret Rowe ran a great race by breaking up Liberty Hill’s pack of five runners to help the team edge out Liberty Hill for third place,” Dixon said.

Other Burnet varsity runners who competed were seniors Matt Breneman, Matt McRae, Levi Seymour, junior Andrew Nylander and sophomores Josh Wilson and Erick Yanez. Anthony Foster participated in the junior varsity division for the Bulldogs.
