Marble Falls High School choir hosting first concert of year
“This is a free concert where we just want to say ‘thank you’ to the community for all their support over the past several years,” choir director Bryce Gage said.
The MFHS Fall Choir Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 2101 Mustang Drive.
The high school choir program has experienced a major change since Gage accepted the lead position three years ago. When he started at Marble Falls there were only 19 students enrolled in the entire program.
This year the program includes more than 140 students spread across five different choirs, and that doesn’t include theater choir. The district also added a full-time assistant choir director this year, Jennie Hodges.
“I’m in the midst of the best year of my career,” Gage said. “I have smart kids who are learning to sing extremely well. And, they’re doing it fast.”
The high school choir has set itself apart in the past several years with major productions such as “Oklahoma” and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”
The students have also recorded and sold a Christmas CD. Last year several choir students advanced two or more rounds in the Texas Music Educators’ Association’s all-state choir selection process. This year, several students have already made it to the second round of the tryouts, which were held Monday at Round Rock Stony Point High School.
Those students are Savannah Spiller, Chelsea Moores, Hannah Faye Foster, Ariel Moncivias, Victoria Noe, Cody Summerville, Duncan Hicks and Bryant Hale.
Several students have also submitted CDs for consideration as members of the national high school choir, Gage said.
“We should know about those pretty soon,” he said.
Today’s concert features performances by five choirs — concert, men’s, women’s, chorale and cantata.
“It’s a great year,” Gage said.
