Hammond wins Meadowlakes council seat

MEADOWLAKES — Gary Hammond defeated Georgina Christy for the Place 3 spot on the City Council May 12, according to results from Burnet County elections officials.

Of the votes tallied, Hammond received nearly 70 percent, or 278 votes; Christy tallied 30 percent, or 120 votes, the results indicated.

Meadowlakes council considers additional water tank; cost could be $350,000

MEADOWLAKES — City officials are considering spending $350,000 to buy an additional water tank because the current system is getting older and has limited storage capacity, officials said.

A representative from Southwest Engineers Inc. told the City Council April 10 the city needs to consider the purchase based on a water-system assessment conducted by the firm.

MEADOWLAKES — City officials have adopted a floodplain map, but with an adjustment aimed at saving residents money on insurance premiums.

The 2012 FEMA Floodplain Mapping Standards are expected to go into effect March 15 for Burnet County communities including Meadowlakes which, like many cities, adopted ordinances with some local changes.

MEADOWLAKES — City Council approved a new automated garbage-collection system Jan. 10, one previously rejected by a split vote at last month's regular meeting.

Residents will begin seeing 96-gallon containers that can be picked up by trucks with mechanical arms. Currently, residents put out containers of all sizes and sometimes messy plastic bags.

"Safety is our number one focus above everything," said Keith Conrad, Allied Waste Services Division Manager, based in Marble Falls. "The residents won't have to purchase containers."

MEADOWLAKES — City leaders have rejected a proposal to automate the community's garbage-collection service after residents raised concerns about larger containers.

But the decision not to change will come with a price hike, said trash company officials.

During the meeting Dec. 13, the City Council voted to extend the existing contract with Allied Waste Services, instead of an upgrade to automated collection.

Though the service remains the same, residents will see immediate rate hikes, raising the monthly rate for standard service from $16.92 to $18.13.
