Simultaneous fires displace family, evacuate neighbors in Kingsland

KINGSLAND — Investigators are probing two fires that broke out about the same time but across town April 23, including one that left a family without a home.

A blaze on McArthur Avenue in a large shed forced neighbors to temporarily evacuate their homes, but it doesn't appear related to the fire that destroyed a manufactured home on Waco Street, firefighters said. Both occurred about noon.

No cause has been determined, but battling two fires at the same time stretched the resources of area departments, firefighters said.

KINGSLAND — The question of whether incorporation would give Kingsland better police protection took center stage during a debate Oct. 11.

Hundreds of audience members packed the Kingsland Community Center as panelists discussed the pros and cons related to the possible incorporation of Kingsland.

Voters get to decide whether the community of about 6,000 should be incorporated during the Nov. 8 election.

Businessman Steve Fraser and retired financial services officer Richard Goertz argued for and businesswoman Shelley Comerford argued against incorporation.

Fraser cited improved public safety as the primary reason for making Kingsland a city.

"It is probably the No. 1 thing," he added.

KINGSLAND — A packed town-hall meeting to learn about the possible incorporation of Kingsland raised more questions than answers when supporters of the initiative didn't show up.

Five members of Say Yes! to Kingsland, a group that submitted a petition for  incorporation, failed to appear during the session Aug. 23 attended by 290 audience members.

Organizers said they needed the group there to answer inquiries raised by attendees about the latest effort to turn the township into the Highland Lakes' newest city.
