BURNET — Though it was merely a dream in 2007, the city's newest park officially is ready for soccer, music, hiking and more. City officials and community leaders gathered May 16 at the 51-acre Haley Nelson Park to dedicate the facility.

Mayor Gary Wideman unveiled a plaque after thanking those who made the park possible.

BURNET — Officials have ordered an autopsy for a motorist burned beyond recognition in a fiery two-vehicle accident on U.S. 281 that also left a Kingsland man battling for his life.

The quick actions of bystanders helped save Michael Warren, 42, of Kingsland, when they dragged him out of a truck before it burst into flames, a Department of Public Safety trooper said May 16.

Cuts of nearly $1.6 million proposed for Burnet schools; closing elementary, pay-to-play are options

BURNET — Closing an elementary campus and charging students to play sports are among the options to trim $1.6 million from the budget as the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District confronts a looming financial crisis.

Among the suggestions to save costs from Superintendent Keith McBurnett to an advisory panel this week are shuttering an elementary campus, charging students to take part in extracurricular activities, increasing attendance to get more state aid; decreasing employee insurance coverage; asking students to pay a fee to ride the school bus; and raising the tax rate.

No action was taken and these are proposals only, officials stressed.

Accident temporarily shuts down U.S. 281 north of Burnet

BURNET — Troopers on May 15 began opening a stretch of U.S. 281 about 5 miles north of Burnet after a two-vehicle accident shut it down for about 90 minutes.

Based on initial reports, the crash was reported about 2:30 p.m. with at least two vehicles involved.

At least one person was rushed to Seton Medical Center Williamson in Round Rock, officials said.

Burnet County dispatch officials confirmed that at 4 p.m. crews were able to open the highway again to traffic.
