BERTRAM — The next City Council meeting won't be Pat Turner's first, but it will be her first as an alderman.

Turner defeated Allen Rodgers for the city's Place 1 seat to fill an unexpired term May 12. She received 58 percent of the vote.

Turner said she couldn't believe she won in her first political race.

"I hope I can do what needs to be done for our city," Turner said. "I'm looking forward to the term to get some cohesiveness back to the City Council and to do what's right for the city and our citizens."

Turner said she has attended several meetings as a resident.

"I've been going to them for a while so that's what made me decide to run," Turner said.

Bertram Mayor Winnette Morris ran for re-election without opposition.

Place 2 candidate Cynthia Anderson and Place 4 candidate John Mandigo also faced no opposition.

The council's next scheduled meeting is May 22.

BERTRAM — Costs to bring the city pool in compliance with new regulations for the physically challenged may go deeper than Bertram can afford, officials said.

The 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act requires public swimming pools to ensure the physically challenged can easily get in and out of the water, which could mean installing lifts at the Bertram facility.

BERTRAM — A councilman who tendered his resignation has changed his mind, averting a potential crisis for the City Council over not being able to call the May 12 elections because no quorum existed.

Trey Smith rescinded his resignation Feb. 3, thereby giving the council four of six members.

By law, the council cannot hold a meeting without a quorum of at least four of their number.

BERTRAM — The City Council's ability to make laws or approve spending could be in jeopardy unless at least one of three council members who recently resigned returns to the fold by Feb. 3.

By law, the six-member council cannot hold a meeting without a quorum of at least four of their number.

Mayor Pro-tem Terry Hale, Councilwoman Marilynn Goode and Councilman Trey Smith resigned Jan. 25. Unless they change their minds, the resignations become effective Feb. 3, officials said.

BERTRAM —The former Bertram police chief found himself on the wrong side of the law June 20 after he was arrested on a charge of tampering with evidence, officials said.

"Last week he presented an insurance card to the Bertram Municipal Court that appeared to be altered," said current Chief Ron Hall.

Hall said an officer initially issued a traffic citation to Caudle's son in April. When the elder Caudle, 55, brought a copy of his son's insurance card to the court, Hall said there were some concerns about the document

"The investigation revealed that the card had been tampered with to change the effective dates," Hall said.
