TxDOT closing up stops

BURNET — Health issues, criminal activity and high maintenance costs are leading to a shutdown of several highway picnic areas in Burnet County by the Texas Department of Transportation.

One of those includes a scenic overlook on U.S. 281 just south of the bridge over Lake Marble Falls.

By closing the picnic areas, which do not have restrooms, the state can save about $25,000 annually, highway officials said. Others are being relinquished to the control of local governments.

Landowner near Cottonwood Shores stirred up over fate of trees during TxDOT construction

COTTONWOOD SHORES — As construction crews advance one culvert at a time down FM 2147 West toward the ones under their driveways, Jane Benedum and John Drake worry about the fates of several live oaks along the right of way.

But they know how they feel about what the Texas Department of Transportation is doing. A sign on the fence says it all:

"ATTN: TXDOT — PLEASE! DON'T DESTROY THESE 100-YEAR-OLD TREES WITH YOUR WASTEFUL SPENDING PROJECTS"

"First, I realize this is the state's property — the right of way," said Benedum, who owns the land that borders the easement. "But for the past 22 years we've taken care of that quarter of a mile by mowing it and other things. If you look at it, you can see it's much more well kept than other (right of way stretches) nearby."

BURNET — A bond to cover road construction in an uninhabited Smithwick subdivision is on hold while Burnet County awaits some legal advice.

“We are within our rights to do it,” Precinct 2 Commissioner Russell Graeter said.
