MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School football team has one last scrimmage before starting the regular season next week.

Marble Falls welcomes Kerrville Tivy at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 to Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive. Freshmen play at 4 p.m., while junior varsity takes the field at 5:15 p.m.

The first part of the competition will be a controlled scrimmage with each offense guaranteed at least 15 plays, regardless of a turnover.

Then, the squads will play two live quarters of 12 minutes each.

Mustangs head coach Matt Green said he wants to see that his players have built on their film study from the scrimmages against Wimberley and Lampasas and practices from the past several days.

“On both sides, you want to see the schemes becoming crystal clear,” he said. “You want to see they are executing at a higher rate. You want to see fewer busted plays. The main thing our staff wants to see is we want to see them showing progress.”

As the play caller, Green said he will be interested in the unit’s pace and rhythm. In last week’s scrimmages, the Mustangs didn’t keep up a quick enough pace for him.

“The kids are going to play faster,” he said. “They’ve shored up the offense and defensive schemes. They’re going to play faster. It’ll be better.”

Tivy was an area finalist a year ago thanks to posting a 5-2 record. The Antlers will be led by junior quarterback Cade Dyle, who threw for 1,474 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. They return three starting offensive linemen.

Green said Marble Falls will show their base offensive and defensive plays.

Coaches have put more emphasis on getting the players in game condition this week.

“I knew we were not in shape the way I wanted us to be as far as the overall effort,” Green said. “We have areas we can improve. They worked hard. The execution of schemes as a whole was good based on the first scrimmage.”

But the most important thing coaches want to see is a group of Mustangs who are attacking.

The key is to play well and get more confident. Once that happens, the players will perform naturally, Green said.

“I think there’s still hesitancy in the kids,” Green said. “I want them to play with aggressiveness. I think we’re very shy. I don’t think our kids are afraid. I want our kids to be more physical. I want them to fly to the ball and be aggressive when they get there.”
