Calvin Willis

Calvin Willis, 84, of Kingsland died June 16, 2012. He was born in Ash Town, Ark., on July 12, 1927, to Commodore Dewey and Elsie Mae (Hawkins) Willis.
He married the love his life, Imogene Gentry, when they were just 17 at a preacher’s house in Slaton. He proudly served his country for 18 months in the Army shortly after their marriage.
He was a cotton farmer in the Lubbock area until complications with the West Texas dirt and pneumonia forced him to find a different line of work. He moved his family to Buchanan Dam, where they purchased Lake Point Cottages.
He was a charter member of Chapel of the Hills Baptist Church in Buchanan Dam. He was a devout Christian, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He taught Sunday school to first- and second-graders at Westview Baptist Church in Slaton and later the men’s Sunday school class at Chapel of the Hills. He was an avid reader and student of the Bible and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Imogene Willis, of Kingsland; children Velma Kennedy and husband Don of Amarillo, Aldon Willis and wife Margaret of Tacoma, Wash., and Rhonda Margell and husband Robert of Kingsland; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers George D. Willis and wife Jeanette of Lubbock and Charles Edward Willis and wife Sally of Buchanan Dam; sisters Ruby Perry and Opal Roberts, both of Lubbock, and Betty Lamb of Round Rock.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Calvin Lydell Willis; brother Joseph Forest Willis; and sister Lucy Mae Willis.
A service is 2 p.m. June 19 at Putnam Funeral Home Chapel, 145 Texas Ave. in Kingsland, (325) 388-0009, with the Rev. Danny Willis officiating.
