Warren Franklin Merritt Jr.

Warren Franklin “Skeeter” Merritt Jr., 84, of Llano died May 1, 2012. He was born in Temple on Dec. 31, 1927, to Warren Franklin Sr. and Mildred (Hay) Merritt.
He was a graduate of Ball High School in Galveston and the University of Texas at Austin and an Army veteran. In 1955, he was hired at Union Carbide, retiring in 1991 after 36 years. His job with Carbide gave him the opportunity to live and make many friends in Texas, Louisiana and West Virginia.
However, his happiest years were spent during his retirement at his home on the Llano River, a place where he said he would spend the rest of his life.
After moving to Llano in 1993, he was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, where he was involved in the Cursillo Movement, Kairos Prison Ministry and other church activities. He also was past chairman of Llano New Horizons, a member of the Llano Noon Lions Club and a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He was most recently a supporter and participant in Caregiver’s Day Out in Llano.
He was an avid football fan and a supporter of the Llano High School Yellow Jackets, the University of Texas Longhorns and the Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Frances Hische Merritt, of Llano; daughter Lynn Merritt Gaudet and husband Steve of St. Francisville, La.; sons David Warren Merritt and wife Elaine Jackson of Amargosa Valley, Nev., Michael Sidney “Mickey” Merritt of Houston and Edward Kelly Merritt of South Charleston, W. Va.; sister Lois Merritt Odell and husband Jack of Stephenville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by son Daniel Norman Merritt and his parents.
A memorial service is 1:30 p.m. May 5 at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home, 307 E. Sandstone in Llano, (325) 247-4300, with a reception following at Grace Episcopal Church in Llano. A private burial will follow.
