Nell Sandusky Harwell Day

Nell Sandusky Harwell Day, 82, died Oct. 29, 2011, after a sudden illness.
She was born Nellie Faye to Bill and Minnie Sandusky in Merkel on Dec. 1, 1928.
She was a graduate of Merkel High School in 1946. She married Charles Harwell of Merkel in 1947 and lived in California and then Kermit before moving to Odessa in the 1950s.
Later in life, she married Kenneth W. Day of Odessa, who preceded her in death in 1985.
She worked many years in industrial and automotive-parts sales in Odessa. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, now Cross Roads Fellowship. She was active in the Northside Senior Center in the ceramic center and loved to play cards.
She was actively involved in the lives of her family and volunteered many hours in support of Bowie Junior High and Odessa High School bands.
One of her great joys was sharing tae kwon do with her daughter and her grandsons, both black belts. She made many trips to tae kwon do tournaments with the boys across the nation, with her favorite being in Connecticut.
She moved to the Hill Country in 2007, arriving only two weeks before the great rain bomb hit Marble Falls. This was quite an event for a West Texas girl. She continued to be involved in crafting and enjoyed her weekly outings to the quilt club.
In her last years she had many new experiences. She traveled to St. John in the Virgin Islands, rode an elephant when the circus came to Granite Shoals, took a helicopter ride and got to see her newest great-granddaughter come in to this world.
Her wildest desire was to drive to Austin; however, her driving boundaries were set to Burnet County.
Survivors include children Peggy Harwell Allen-Smith and Larry Harwell. Peggy and Terry Smith reside in Marble Falls. Peggy Smith’s children are Russell and wife L’Don Allen of Frisco, Robin Allen – deceased, Andrea Smith of Austin and Stephen Smith of Austin.
Larry and Leslie Harwell live in Odessa. The children are Crystal Billings of Lubbock, Jeremie and wife Melody Billings of Anson, and Charity and husband Jason Wheeldon of Odessa.
A service is 10 a.m. Nov. 5 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 U.S. 281 North in Marble Falls, (830) 693-4373.
