Granite Shoals approves tax increase and sets budget
FROM STAFF REPORTS
GRANITE SHOALS — The Granite Shoals City Council approved a tax increase of 2.65 cents and set the budget for the 2016-17 fiscal year during a special meeting Sept. 16. The overall tax rate is 54.72 cents per $100 valuation, which supports a budget of $6,784,677.
The maintenance and operation (general fund) of the budget gets 32.85 cents, while the debt service gets 21.87 cents of the overall tax rate.
The increase could add $26.50 to the tax bill for a home valued at $100,000 if that property’s appraised value hasn’t changed from the previous year. Shifts up or down in a property’s appraised value can influence the actual tax bill.
The increased tax rate will pay for:
• an additional firefighter to work from 6-10 p.m. seven days a week;
• the second payment of $25,000 for the $50,000 fire engine that was purchased Sept. 6;
• and a part-time parks and maintenance worker. The goal is to hire that person full time in January.
