Doreen Howell Hare passed away peacefully at Seton Hospital in Burnet, Texas, on April 19, 2016, at 11:05 a.m. She was 82 years old. She was born Oct. 14, 1933, in Hull, England, to Robert Norman and Gladys Gertrude Whitfield Howell.

She is survived by brother, Bob Howell, and sisters Elsie Howell McIntyre and Phylis Howell Abel, who reside in England. Her parents and sisters June Howell Last and Pauline Howell Jackson are deceased.

As a child living in England during World War II, she endured the terror of war with constant air raid bombings and V-2 rocket attacks. As a teenager, she enjoyed ice skating and roller derby. At the age of 21, she married Kenneth “Rabbit” Hare, who was serving a tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force in Margate, England.

Doreen studied hard to become a U.S. citizen, and her citizenship was granted on July 30, 1962. They traveled extensively and lived in many different countries. Upon retirement, they chose Kingsland, Texas. Being very patriotic, Doreen was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. She volunteered for duty with the Disabled American Veterans chapter 198 in Kingsland. During her 30 years of faithful service, she served as DAV Auxiliary commander for seven years and chaplain for four years.

Doreen loved her arts and crafts, was a seamstress and wrote inspirational poetry. She has one daughter, Dorina Hare, and two loving sons, Kenny and Gary Hare. Her grandchildren are Jesika Farmer Hare, Shey Bolen and Zakkery Barr. Her great-grandchildren are Echo, Epic, Frey and Braxton.

She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.

Her celebration of life memorial is 5 p.m. April 27 at the DAV chapter building on the corner of RR 1431 and 2545 in Kingsland, next to 7-11 store. Our mother wanted no flowers and instead to send cash donations to Vet-Rides in Burnet, (830) 613-9982.

Her favorite saying was “Keep calm and carry on.” For more information, call Rabbit at (830) 613-1908.
