Leta Duncan “Scratch” Lawrence of Llano, Texas, passed away at the age of 89 on March 26, 2016. She was born on June 17, 1926, to Ernest and Nora Duncan in Llano.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Nora Duncan; brothers, Francis Duncan, Eb Duncan, Joe Duncan and Lee Duncan; sisters, Loma Duncan Roberts, Myra Duncan Fryer, Wilma Duncan Horne and Ruthe Duncan; and husband, Walter P. Lawrence.
Leta married Walter Lawrence on Sept. 21, 1945, and they had two children, Ann Lawrence Gray and Steve Lawrence.
She is survived by her two children, Ann Lawrence Gray and husband Randle Gray of Llano and Steve Lawrence and wife Monica Lawrence of Hutto; grandson, Philip Lawrence and wife Tara of Queen Creek, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.
Leta graduated from Durham’s Business College in Austin.
She was an active member of Allandale Baptist Church in Austin, where she taught primaries, until returning in 1971 to Llano, where her children finished school.
She and her husband and two children joined First Christian Church of Llano in 1971 with the encouragement of her sister, Loma Roberts.
After raising her children, she went to medication aide school and worked for seven years for Hill Country Manor, now Hill Country Healthcare.
She and her husband, Walter, returned to Austin in 1984 to work at the IRS Service Center. She received many awards of service from the IRS in Austin.
Her husband died in Austin on June 12, 1985. She remained in Austin with her daughter, who was working in Austin, and continued to work until she retired in January 1995. She and her daughter moved back to Llano, where she still had family.
She was a fine seamstress and homemaker. She also loved growing flowers and gardening.
A graveside service is 11 a.m. March 30 at Llano City Cemetery with Pastor Gretel Morgan officiating.
