Three-team scrimmage should be ‘good gauge’ for Mustangs
MARBLE FALLS — A three-team scrimmage Aug. 13 in Wimberly for the Marble Falls High School football team against Wimberley and Kyle Lehman should tell coaches quite a bit about the 2011 Mustangs.
Wimberley, with eight returning starters on offense and defense, are a Class 3A state championship favorite.
The Texans, known for their spread offense, feature a lethal passer in quarterback Brady Lambert and running back Trinity Wilson.
“The bottom line is,” head coach Cord Woerner said, “Wimberley is going to be a good gauge for us. It’s a good test early to see where and (whether) our young kids can handle it.”
Woerner also believes Lehman will reveal plenty about the Mustangs. They will have two different defensive schemes and three different offensive schemes.
“Lehman always gives us a good, physical scrimmage,” he said. “They’ll give us variety to allow us to work on some things.”
The Lobos feature a running attack with backs Charles Williams and Levi Medley.
First-stringers will get the majority of the snaps on both sides of the ball, usually about 20 snaps on offense and on defense. Top reserves will get about 15 plays each, while third-stringers will get at least 10.
“We want to get everybody a look,” Woerner said. “A lot of that depends on how hungry people are in a position.”
This marks the Mustangs’ first live action against an opponent not already a member of the team.
Marble Falls conducted its intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 6. Woerner said he was pleased with the way most of the newcomers are performing. As for retention, he paused before answering that he was content overall with the progress.
Now it’s a matter of getting it all together, which he hopes happens at Wimberley.
“I always have some guys I wasn’t expecting to have to step up,” he said. “That’s what makes the competition good. Having competition at practice is healthy for us.”
