WIMBERLEY — Before boarding a bus for a three-team scrimmage against Wimberley and Kyle Lehman on Aug. 13, Marble Falls High School football coach Cord Woerner said he would learn a lot about his club in what he called “a measuring stick.”

On Aug. 15, Woerner said he liked how his squad measured up.

“Honestly, I was very pleased with how we executed for the most part,” he said. “We have to learn to travel and get off the bus with more intensity.”

Offensively, the Mustangs scored against Wimberley, which is ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A. Marble Falls scored in 12 plays in the controlled portion of the scrimmage and again in the live portion.

The Mustangs reached the Lehman 20 but failed to score in 12 plays. In the live portion, Marble Falls failed to score on a field goal.

“We did a good job of moving the ball,” Woerner said.

Defensively, Marble Falls kept both opponents from scoring.

“Our angles and down blocking and pulls, they were a lot better in the scrimmage,” Woerner said. “We still have pass-protection issues we have to work on.”

The Mustangs have handled the scrimmages how coaches want them to — for the most part, by playing hard, Woerner said.

“I was pleased with our effort,” he said. “We’re getting a little better every week. We’re going to keep getting things exposed. We’re going to keep getting things exposed.”

Marble Falls will play at Fredericksburg on Aug. 18. Subvarsities will play at 5 p.m., while the varsity takes the field at 6:30 p.m.
