MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School football team’s defense shined on the first day of fall training camp Aug. 3.

The defense didn’t allow many yards after scrimmage and even had an interception. Its performance caught the eye of head coach Matt Green.

“Great intensity, great aggression by our defense,” he said. “Our defense is our strength. They’re experienced, athletic, big and strong.”

He noted the unit’s chemistry beginning with the defensive line that got a great push. That opened gaps for the linebackers to read and react quickly, and the secondary was able to jump routes or swarm to receivers as soon as they turned and looked for the ball.

The search to find a new starting quarterback continues. Juniors Cade Cool and Robert Atkinson took snaps behind center, which allowed Green, who also serves as the quarterback coach, to observe, correct and advise on mechanics, technique and reads. No matter who winds up at starting quarterback, the coach said both players will contribute during the season.

“I think going in right now, it’s a two-man race,” he said. “They both have different strengths. And they’re both good enough players that they’re going to be on the field. They’re both going to play.”

While the players aren’t in game shape yet, Green said he was pleased with the energy level. The Mustangs finished their strength-and-conditioning program the previous week, so they can work more on the playbook and spend less time conditioning.

“We’re in good shape,” Green said.

He declined to say how many incoming 10th- through 12th-graders were participating in workouts, adding he was waiting for others who were finishing up vacations or didn’t have their paperwork ready to go.
