BURNET — U.S. Army veteran and writer Stan Poel will speak April 9 as part of the Coffee Talks author series at the Herman Brown Free Library.
The free program is 2 p.m. at the library, 100 E. Washington St. Refreshments will be served at 1:30 p.m.
Poel’s suspense novel “Of Souls and Patriots” tells the story of Mack DeHaan, a Vietnam veteran who gets drawn back into conflict when terrorists threaten Washington, D.C.
According to Poel’s publisher, West Bow Press, the book is a “suspenseful tale of heroism” that “addresses the hidden wounds of war and recovery from those wounds.”
After serving in the Army and completing an advanced degree in blind rehabilitation, Poel devoted his career to helping veterans, according to a library news release. He moved to Central Texas after retiring from the Department of Veterans Affairs as director of Blind Rehabilitation Service.
Poel said he writes fiction “as a new avenue of service to America’s best and bravest.”
His books will be available for purchase and signing after the program.
Coffee Talks programs are the second Thursday of the month. In May, Clark Gray will speak about Bee Ho Gray, a Comanche entertainer who performed in Vaudeville and Wild West Shows in the late 19th and early 20th centuries alongside the likes of Buffalo Bill and Will Rogers.
