Johnnie Adelle Griffin Bray was born in Matador, Texas, to L.M. Griffin and Margie “Pauline” Lee. She attended school in Matador, except for her senior year (only went to 11 grades.)

J.D. and Johnnie eloped to Muleshoe, Texas, on March 15, 1942. She then graduated from Lubbock High School in May 1942.

She died Feb. 14, 2015.

She is survived by her husband of 72-plus years, J.D. Bray; sons, Jim Bray and wife Pat of Wills Point, Gary and wife Connie of Georgetown and Joe and wife Cheryl of Garland; and daughter, Janean Burton and husband Robert of Kingsland; eight grandchildren, Sharla Deen, Donnie Bray, Greg Bray, Daryl Bray, Angela Afshar, Jaclyn Allsup, Randy Burton and Reid Burton; eight great-grandchildren, Korey Deen, Anna and Ryan Bray, Dylan and Hannah Afshar, and Carter, Ethan and Gage Allsup; brother, B.R. Griffin and wife Geneva; sister-in-law Helen Bray; plus many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, L.M. Griffin and Margie “Pauline” Lee, and granddaughter Pamela Bray.

In 1946, J.D.’s parents bought 200 acres four miles southwest of Wolfforth, and J.D. and Johnnie moved their two-roomer there along with his brother and family. She had her first new home in Lubbock with beautiful hardwood floors.

Johnnie pulled cotton at the Bray family farm and bought J.D. his first suit and helped pay for Gary’s tonsillectomy. She was instrumental in J.D. becoming a Christian, followed in the next few months by sister-in-law Helen Bray, J.D.’s parents, plus several other Bray relatives. She taught a girls class at Colgate Church of Christ (which Pat and Connie were in.) Had she already picked wives for the boys?

They moved to Kingsland on Nov. 15, 1967, and began Bray’s Lodge.

Johnnie helped care for J.D.’s parents, her mother and Aunt Mallie, all the while continuing to teach Bible class at Highland Lakes Church of Christ. She was a faithful Christian and a true servant for over 65 years.
