Hikes, classes and more at Inks Lake State Park in February
HOOVER’S VALLEY — Inks Lake State Park has several activities planned for February.
The park is located at 3630 Park Road 4 near Burnet. Entrance fees are $6 for ages 13 and older, $3 for Texas residents 65 and older and free for ages 12 and younger.
Programs include:
• Dutch oven cooking class, 4 p.m. Feb. 14 — Learn the basics of cooking outdoors in a Dutch oven. Bring a spoon and a plate to sample the recipes. Free with entrance fees. Meet at the amphitheater.
• Native fibers workshop, 1-3 p.m. Feb. 14 and 28 — Learn the technique for making paper by hand using plant fibers and a portable Hollander beater attached to a bicycle. Open to the first 30 to register. Free with entrance fees. Meet at Campsite 220.
• Night Sky Party stargazing, 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (weather permitting) — View the night sky with a computer-controlled telescope. Cost is $10 plus entrance fees. Meet near the playground in front of Chris’ Landing.
• Fishing with a Ranger, 10-11 a.m. Saturdays — Learn the basics of fishing with a park ranger. Free with entrance fees. Meet behind the park store.
Hikes include:
• Geology Rocks! noon-2 p.m. Feb. 7 — Learn about local geology with a hike to Devil’s Waterhole. Free with entrance fees. Meet at the Devil’s Waterhole trailhead.
• Junior Ranger Adventure, noon-1 p.m. Feb. 21 — Take a hour-long hike to Stumpy Hollow and learn about how to conserve natural resources. Free with entrance fees. Meet at the Pecan Flats trailhead.
• Bat and Owl Prowl, 5:30 p.m. Feb. 28 — Go on a one-mile hike to search for bats and owls. Free with entrance fees. Meet at the Pecan Flats trailhead.
• Twilight hike at Spring Creek, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Fridays — Enjoy a Valley Spring Creek Trail hike to Devil’s Waterhole. Free with entrance fees. Meet at the Devil’s Waterhole trailhead.
