BURNET — The two football squads picked to finish first and second in District 13-4A will battle it out at Rocket Field on Oct. 17.
The game between Burnet (5-1 overall, 1-0 district) and Waco Robinson (5-1, 1-0) kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Rocket Field is located at 500 W. Lyndale Ave. in Robinson.

“I don’t know that means anything,” Burnet head coach Kurt Jones said about the preseason district picks. “I know that’s two good teams going at it in Waco. That’s a big ball game. Obviously, every week in this district is big. Robinson is a very good team. We’ll have to be at our very best.”
The Rockets enter this game with a 40-14 victory at Lampasas last week. Other wins were against Taylor (59-20), Lorena (25-18), Mexia (27-20) and Fairfield (35-7). Their loss was to Athens (23-20).
Robinson is led by running back LeVonte Owens, who had 224 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries against Lampasas. He has earned offers from Brigham Young University, Minnesota and New Mexico. Against Taylor, he ran for 286 yards. Quarterback Michael Davila completed 11 of 14 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown against Lampasas. Of the Rockets’ 528 yards, 408 were on the ground for almost eight yards a carry.
Jones said the Rockets operate a spread offense that looks similar to the Bulldogs’ offense.
“They prefer to go at a faster pace than we do,” he said. “(Davila) is a dual-threat quarterback. They’re big up front, and they have good receivers.”
Defensively, the Rockets feature a tall and wide front seven who are “big, physical and aggressive,” Jones said. Robinson returned 10 defensive starters from last year.
“They’re salty on defense,” he said.
Jones said he liked what he saw from his team against China Spring, especially in the first half, when the Bulldogs led 28-7. And he noted winning at someone else’s stadium is not easy.
“We got in the second half and didn’t move it like we wanted to,” he said. “We knew they were a good team.”
The Bulldogs tallied 412 yards of total offense; the Cougars finished with 316.
“I still think they’ll be a playoff team in this district,” Jones said about China Spring. “They’ve played in some very tight games. They’re scary.”
For the season, Burnet junior quarterback Austin Moore has completed 85 passes for 1,222 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. Senior running back Eric Walker has rushed 80 times for 495 yards and 16 touchdowns, and senior receiver Cody Jones has caught 34 receptions for 618 yards and seven touchdowns.
