Friday night football: Week 2 match-ups

Highland Lakes football teams return to the field Friday, Sept. 4, for Week 2 of the 2026-27 season, with Marble Falls, Burnet and Faith Academy hosting games while Llano hits the road.
Here’s the Sept. 4 matchups:
Marble Falls vs. Little River Academy Bumblebees (Home)
KICKOFF: 7:00 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK: Lockhart 45, Marble Falls 29
Marble Falls looks to bounce back Friday when it hosts Little River Academy after opening the season with a 45-29 loss to Lockhart.
The Mustangs faced a difficult test in the opener against the Lions, a 5A Division II program one classification above Marble Falls. Despite the loss, head coach Keri Timmerman said he saw plenty to build on heading into Week 2.
“I thought the kids played really hard for four quarters,” Timmerman told DailyTrib. “Our kids gutted out the fourth quarter and we’re ready to win a game.”
The Mustangs went behind early after a fumble and an interception on their first two drives, then allowed a big scoring run.
“It’s hard to play from behind,” Timmerman said. “I thought the kids did a great job of keeping their minds right, rallying back.”
Timmerman said the Mustangs do not need to make major changes after the opener, pointing to a stat line that reflected a team capable of winning.
“Nothing needs to change,” he said. “I mean, we didn’t fall apart. The offense didn’t not work, the defense didn’t not work. At times, we had one or two people make a mistake and in football, that’s just the reality of it.”
The Mustangs will put that resilience to the test Friday against Little River Academy, which opened its season with a 53-15 win over Rogers.
Burnet Bulldogs vs. Taylor Ducks (Home)
KICKOFF: 7:00 p.m. Friday
WHERE: Bulldog Stadium, 1401 N. Main St in Burnet
LAST WEEK: Llano 38, Burnet 31
Burnet will keep battling on Friday when it hosts Taylor after opening the season with a close 38-31 road loss to Llano.
Burnet faced Llano in a rivalry matchup that came down to the final seconds. After trailing 31-17 heading into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs rallied to tie the game at 31-31 before Llano scored the deciding touchdown with 25 seconds remaining.
Despite the loss, Burnet fought back from a two-score deficit, using a surprise onside kick to help set up the tying touchdown.
“The outcome wasn’t what we wanted, but we could not be more proud of our boys and their tremendous never-quit, never-say-die attitude,” head coach Ben Speer said in a social media post. “They battled until the very end and showed the kind of fight and character we want this program to represent.”
Burnet now turns its attention to Taylor, which opened the season with a 40-20 win over Austin Eastside.
Faith Academy Flames vs. Hill Country Christian Rams (Home)
KICKOFF: 7:00 p.m. Friday
WHERE: Britton Football Field, 3151 East Ranch Road 1431 in Marble Falls
LAST WEEK: Founders Classical Academy 42, Faith Academy 16
Faith Academy looks to turn things around Friday when it hosts Hill Country Christian after opening the season with a 42-16 loss to Founders Classical Academy.
The Flames fell behind against the Archers and were unable to close the gap, dropping to 0-2 to start the season.
Faith Academy will have an opportunity to get back on track at home Friday against Hill Country Christian.
Llano Yellowjackets at Jim Ned Indians
KICKOFF: 7:00 p.m. Friday
WHERE: Indian Stadium, CR 131 at Turner Drive in Tuscola
LAST WEEK: Llano 38, Burnet 31
Llano opened the season with a statement in one of the area’s most familiar rivalries, edging Burnet 38-31 in a game that wasn’t decided until the final seconds.
The Yellowjackets established control after Burnet briefly took a 10-3 lead, scoring 14 unanswered points to take a 17-10 advantage into halftime. Llano continued to build on that lead before Burnet mounted its fourth-quarter comeback.
The Bulldogs eventually tied the game at 31-31, but Llano had the final answer, scoring a touchdown with 25 seconds left to pull out the win.
Llano will take its 1-0 record into Week 2 against Jim Ned, which opened the season with a 39-12 loss to Greenwood.
