BURNET — It’s homecoming week at Burnet High School, and few people have to tell the Bulldogs football team that winning the game is the cherry on top of a fun week.

The Bulldogs welcome Waco University (0-3) at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 to Bulldog Field, 1000 The Green Mile. The homecoming parade scheduled for Sept. 18 has been canceled due to weather.

Waco University has yet to score more than 14 points in a game, losing to Killeen Harker Heights 52-13 on Sept. 12, Georgetown East View 51-14 on Sept. 5, and Belton 48-0 on Aug. 30.

The Trojans are led by quarterback Joshua Browning and running back Xavier Tomlinson, nephew of former NFL running back LaDainian Tomlinson. The team has a new offensive coordinator who is installing a version of the spread offense. Also in the backfield is Bobby Browning.

“They’ll run the ball out of the spread offense,” Burnet head coach Kurt Jones said. “It’ll be another challenge, a different type of challenge than Fredericksburg.”

The Bulldogs enter this game after dominating a Fredericksburg team that had won 12 of its last 14 games. Burnet won 55-7 on Sept. 12.

“It was a good win for us,” Jones said. “We played pretty solid in all phases.”

Entering the contest, the head coach said he believed the Burnet defense would play the way it did during scrimmages in August. And he was right.

Burnet had two interceptions returned for touchdowns by Darius Johnson and Trent Rockafellow.

“We really kept pressure on (Fredericksburg quarterback Kyle) Grona,” the coach said. “Even the one time they moved the ball, there were three penalties on us that aided them.”
