James H. Walker, 95, of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, passed away July 23, 2014. He was born to James Thomas and Jennie Mae (Jones) Walker on July 25, 1918, in Springtown, Texas.

He married Lily Letitia Freeman on Sept. 4, 1939, in Midland, Texas.

James proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the USS Essex Fighting Squadron 9 as a rear seat gunner in a dive bomber. He was in eight major South Pacific battles and received his honorable discharge in September 1945.

James and Lily returned to Midland, where they established the Walker Nursery & Garden Center that they operated for 30 years before retiring in 1974. They then moved to Sandy Harbor.

James served as a volunteer fireman of the Sandy Harbor Volunteer Fire Department and was fire chief from 1985 to 1987.

James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lily; sister, Mary Helen McCoy; brother-in-law, J.V. “Mac” McCoy; brother, Robert L. Walker; and sister-in-law, Ruth Walker.

James is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service is 10:30 a.m. Aug. 9 at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park Cemetery near Burnet with the Rev. George Harrivel officiating and military honors by the Highland Lakes Honor Guard officiating.
