MIDLOATHIAN — The Burnet High School boys basketball team’s season ended with a 70-56 loss to Wichita Falls Hirschi in the area round of the Class 3A playoffs Feb. 21.

“They played their hearts out,” Bulldogs head coach Roy Kiser said. “I know these guys are disappointed they didn’t keep playing. We didn’t make enough plays. We didn’t make enough shots.”

The Bulldogs (21-12 overall, 9-1 District 8-3A) led 6-3 about four minutes into the contest. But the Huskies responded by going on a 9-2 run for a 12-8 advantage at the end of the quarter.

That lead went to 28-16 at the half behind the hot shooting of Hirschi’s Terrence Cooper. He finished the game with 27 points thanks to nailing six 3-pointers.

“We ran up against a guy who just didn’t miss,” Kiser said. “I don’t know that he missed a shot.”

Still, Burnet wouldn’t go away.

The Bulldogs began the third quarter on a tear, trimming the deficit to 34-28.

But the Huskies responded with a 10-4 run for a 44-32 advantage headed into the final period.

“Credit to them,” Kiser said. “They made a lot of shots.”

Burnet outscored Hirschi 24-22 in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Colton Stevens led the Bulldogs with 20 points followed by senior post Clayton Baumgart with 15, senior guard Derek Kiser with nine, senior post Chase Mardis with eight and sophomore guard Brian Bullock and senior post Joe Parker with two each.

Kiser said scoring points wasn’t easy against the Huskies, and his players fought until the final horn sounded.

What he’ll remember about this season is the way his players weren’t too high after wins or too low after losses.

“I like that,” he said. “That breeds consistency.”
