GATESVILLE — The Burnet High School boys basketball team defeated Gatesville 54-40 on Jan. 24 to finish the first round of District 8-3A play in first place.
“It’s a great place to be,” Bulldogs head coach Roy Kiser said. “But we understand we have five games left.”
The Bulldogs raced to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter that ballooned to 26-7 at the half.
The Hornets outscored Burnet 33-28 in the second half.
“We had great defensive effort again,” Kiser said. “We knew how well Gatesville shoots the three, but our kids held them in check for most of the game.
The Bulldogs didn’t allow Gatesville’s best shooters to take a shot in the first half, he said.
The second round of district play will begin a day later than scheduled because of travel concerns due to winter weather conditions. Burnet hosts Liberty Hill at 8 p.m. Jan. 29 at The Doghouse, 1000 The Green Mile in Burnet.

GATESVILLE — The Burnet High School girls basketball team defeated Gatesville 42-24 on Jan. 24 in District 8-3A action.
Leading 24-21 going into the final quarter, the Lady Dawgs outscored the Lady Hornets 18-3 for the victory.
Burnet head coach Doug Messer noted his players didn’t allow Gatesville to score a field goal in the first or fourth periods.
“We played great defense,” he said. “Our defense led to offense. Ten people scored.”
He added the Lady Dawgs got better defensively as the game wore on, and he was happy to see the devotion to rebounding.
Burnet hit three 3-pointers, and Messer said the Lady Hornets kept changing their defenses in the hopes of slowing the Lady Dawgs. It didn’t work, he said.
“We shoot the ball better than people realize,” he said. “We went with the flow.”
Officials have moved the Jan. 28 home game against Liberty Hill to Jan. 29 because of winter weather conditions. Tipoff is still at 6:30 p.m. at The Doghouse, 1000 The Green Mile in Burnet.
