MARBLE FALLS — The Faith Academy girls basketball team crushed Blanco 79-48 on Nov. 19.

But the Lady Flames’ effort didn’t reflect the score, according to head coach Jerry English.

“On paper, it was not that (well-played of) a game,” English said. “We had way, way too many turnovers, and most were unforced.”

English’s concern was that his players missed too many layups and didn’t rebound to the level he likes for their quick breaks. The difference between a quick break and a fast break is, in a quick break, the ball is passed no more than four times and no player dribbles.

“Our quick break did not resemble anything we’ve done,” he said. “It didn’t look like anything we’ve been practicing. We’ve been practicing for a month, and I felt like that would hold us together. We have not rebounded the ball like we need to. And if you don’t defensive rebound, then you can’t run.”

In addition, Faith was 13 of 27 from the free-throw line for 48 percent.

“That will get you beat in other games,” English said.

Part of the challenge, he added, is the Lady Flames are still getting used to each other. The upperclassmen, who have at least two years on the varsity, are getting comfortable with the underclassmen, who are still adjusting to the speed and physicality of competing on the varsity, he said.

“It’s awfully early,” he said. “There’s still a lot of work to do.”
