BURNET — A faster group of Burnet High School football players dominated Wimberley during the Bulldogs’ final scrimmage Aug. 22.Burnet scored a touchdown in the controlled scrimmage and three in the live quarter while only allowing the Texans to score once in the controlled portion.

Burnet senior receiver Blayne Parisher hauled in the first touchdown, a short pass from senior quarterback Derek Kiser that Parisher turned into about a 70-yard touchdown as he refused to go down.

Then, in the live quarter, Burnet senior running back Trenton Hafley ran in for a 4-yard score, which was set up by a 56-yard catch by junior receiver Cody Jones from Kiser.

Parisher added another 20-yard touchdown reception from Kiser. And Burnet junior receiver Cory Campbell caught a 60-yard touchdown pass, running down the sideline for most of it, from junior quarterback Cameron Chafin.

Bulldogs head coach Kurt Jones said Kiser, Hafley and Parisher performed to their highest standards. He complimented the offensive line for opening holes for the running backs and giving the quarterbacks time to find receivers in the passing game.

Because of the linemen’s play, the Bulldogs showed off other offensive weapons, such as senior running back Jonathan Brown, senior receivers Darius Johnson and Jamal Brown and Campbell.

“It’s what helps make an offense good,” Jones said. “We have five or six receivers we feel good about.”

Senior kicker Austin Huff thrilled fans by nailing a 50-yard field goal that took a bounce off the track and into a concession stand. Huff was perfect on all field goals and extra points.

While the Burnet offense recorded several big plays, the Burnet defense was equally good. Junior linebacker Kody Hall led the charge in containing the Wimberley offense. The Bulldogs’ front seven was quicker out of stances after the ball was snapped and recorded numerous tackles for losses and a couple of sacks.

“I think our defense has made a ton of progress,” Jones said. “They’re just now learning how good they can be. We knew last year, when we changed the scheme, we were going to go through some growing pains. They’ll continue to get better.”

One of the groups that pleased Jones the most was the secondary.

“I was proud of our defensive backs. Our defensive backs payed well, they were physical,” he said.

Burnet opens the regular season 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Fredericksburg, 1107 Texas 16 South.
