MARBLE FALLS — As spring practice wrapped up May 23 with the Purple and Gold game, the Marble Falls High School football team now moves on to 7-on-7 play.

Marble Falls is one of several 7-on-7 teams competing at the Round Rock Westwood state qualifying tournament May 25.

Marble Falls begins Pool A play at 9 a.m. at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex, which is part of the Round Rock Independent School District, 10211 West Parmer Lane in Round Rock. The Mustangs will face Hutto, then Austin Anderson at 10 a.m. and Westwood at 11 a.m. In all, there are 17 squads in the tournament.

The pool winners advance to the semifinals for single elimination. The two squads that play for the championship earn automatic berths to the state tournament.

The Mustangs will play in two other state qualifier tournaments, at Lake Travis on June 1 and then will host the last one June 22.

“That’ll be the first time Marble Falls has hosted a state qualifier,” Dodge said. “We host 16 teams on June 22 here right at Mustang Stadium.”

Marble Falls will face Lake Travis on a weekly basis beginning in June. Dodge said the aim is to get two other teams to form a league.

“If that happens, that’s great,” he said. “If not, us and Lake Travis kids will get together and compete and get some good reps in. And that’s the big thing about 7-on-7 is just getting the reps. You’d like to have a little variety of who you compete against. But the main thing is kids are throwing and catching and covering and working on time and on team work.”
