Betty Slaughter, 85, passed away peacefully April 25, 2013, at home in Spicewood with her family beside her. She was born in Wausau, Wis., on May 18, 1927, to Bill and Lila (Geier) Tatroe.

Her parents and their siblings were in vaudeville and traveled until she was 4. She has lived in Coffeyville, Kan., and Harlingen, where she met and married Charles. She also lived in Austin and Ozona before finally settling in Spicewood.

She graduated from Harlingen High School in 1945 and attended Trinity University in San Antonio. She was a Red Cross volunteer in the 1950s and 1960s and worked the Mississippi floods. Betty served as the Red Cross disaster chairwoman for Cameron County, taught Red Cross first aid and was a water safety Instructor for many years in Harlingen.

She managed TX Econ Services, an insurance-premium finance company, and was secretary/bookkeeper for Harlingen Independent School District, Amber Construction, Faulkner Construction and Calcasieu Lumber Co. before retiring in 1971. She also was a founding member of the Spicewood Community Library and continued to volunteer there for seven years.

Betty was preceded in death by the loves of her life: her husband of 58 years, Charles; their 1-year-old son, Clifton Ray; her parents; and brother Billy Ray Tatroe.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Val and Jimmy McCandless, and their children, Michael, Scott and wife Neecie and Amber and husband John; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Janice Slaughter, and their children, Christopher and Matthew. Betty also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many good friends.

A memorial service for Betty is 1 p.m. May 1 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 U.S. 281 North in Marble Falls, (830) 693-4373. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Spicewood Community Library.
