The Burnet Fire Department will get new air packs to protect firefighters from breathing in smoke and hazardous fumes using federal and city funding.

Burnet City Council approved the purchase of 25 self-contained breathing apparatuses during a Tuesday, Oct. 27, meeting, totaling roughly $286,000 in expenses.

According to Burnet Fire Chief Mark Ingram, a federal grant accepted by the council earlier in October will cover nearly $209,000 of the cost, with the city on the hook for the remaining $87,000.

The purchase will reportedly include the 25 apparatuses, harness assemblies, facepieces, heads-up displays, voice amplification systems, quick-connect components, and other associated setup equipment.

Chief Ingram added that the department’s old breathing apparatuses would be disposed of, as they have a set expiration date, but any remaining air tanks would be sold to smaller departments in need.
