Mary Maxine Scoggins Rushing died Oct. 1, 2010. She was born April 3, 1924, in Louisiana to George and Savannah Scoggins.

After she graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans, she lived in the Rio Grande Valley and taught second grade for the Harlingen Independent School District for several years.

Later, she received a special-education certification to help children with special needs.

She was hearing impaired.

After retirement in 1979, she was a volunteer for the Valley Baptist Hospital and the HOST reading program in Harlingen.

Later, she lived near her daughter in Meadowlakes, where she became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marble Falls, made many friends and enjoyed going to her great-grandsons’ sporting events.

Rushing wore a hat to match every outfit and was known as the “Hat Lady.”

She resided at Gateway Gardens and Granite Mesa Health Center in Marble Falls during the last three years of her life.

She was a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, cousin, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many.

Survivors include daughter Pat and son-in-law Russell Roper; grandson Jason Roper and wife Rhonda; granddaughter Amy Briseno and husband Joe; great- grandchildren Joshua, Natalie, Hayden, Charlotte and Cade; brother Jack Scoggins and wife Tina of McAllen; brother Kenneth Scoggins and wife Ruth of Harlingen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Maloy; parents; sister Verla Mynier; and cousins.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Oct. 6 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 U.S. 281 North in Marble Falls, (830) 693-4373.

A funeral service is 11 a.m. Oct. 8 in San Benito at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
