Benjamin Barnard Spears, 74, died Nov. 5, 2010, after a two-year battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 10, 1936, in Austin to Benjamin Madison Spears and Jewel Barnard Spears.

He spent four years in the Air Force and retired from the Post Office after 35 years. He moved from Austin to Burnet in 1997.

His greatest joy in life was the love he shared with his wife. Their bond was unbreakable and they rarely were apart. He enjoyed football and was an avid tennis player for many years.

He enjoyed gathering with friends and family for barbecues and watching the Dallas Cowboy football games.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Pauline; daughter Paula Ann Wood and husband Randy of Charlotte, N.C.; son Jeffery Barnard Spears of Sunrise Beach; grandsons Zachary and Joshua Wood; brothers Gene Spears of Henderson, Nev., and Dwight Spears of Austin; sisters Julia Miles of Buda and Frances Green and husband Larry of Waynesville, N.C.; brother-in-law John Hathaway and wife Jana of Round Rock; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; half-brother Fred Ideus; brother-in-law Wilton Miles; sister-in-law Jodi Hathaway; and brother-in-law Curtis Hathaway. 
A memorial service was Nov. 7 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 306 Texas 29 in Burnet, (512) 756-2222.

The family thanks the Cancer Center of South Texas in Marble Falls for the best  chemo nurse, Tanya, and Dr. Glenn G. Preston and staff; also to the many friends and family for their support and visits; Encompass Home Care nurses, especially Mike Taylor; and to Lighthouse Hospice and Vickie Thompson, the most kind and caring nurse.
