A Texas Department of Public Safety report said a pickup truck pulling a livestock trailer crossed into oncoming traffic on U.S. 281 near Park Road 4 just before a collision that killed five people on July 25. The deadly incident happened at around 6 p.m. Friday between Marble Falls and Burnet, stalling traffic for over two hours.

The DPS said three vehicles were involved in the collision. According to the report, a 2018 Dodge Ram 4500 truck pulling a trailer northbound on U.S. 281 crossed into southbound traffic and struck a Chevrolet Malibu head on. The initial impact with the Malibu caused the Ram to turn further into an arc and then hit a Mercedes SUV that was traveling behind the Malibu.

The SUV overturned and caught fire. All five occupants of that vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the Ram and Malibu received non-life-threatening injuries. According to the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office, the horses in the trailer survived the accident.

  1. The tragedy of this accident is so upsetting! Even more so in that the sheriff of Burnet County has said there aren’t an unusual number of accidents in that area, which is absurd. This one accident wasn’t about running the light, but more will be revealed as the investigation continues. I travel this stretch of 281 and Park Road 4 every day and have for the past 22 years. Everyone who does has seen numerous accidents and even more near-misses. Every traffic light between Burnet and Marble Falls needs a police presence to ticket people who run those lights. THE SPEED LIMIT NEEDS TO BE LOWERED due to the huge increase in the number of vehicles (especially trucks) over the last few years. If it saves even one life, it’s worth it. My heart breaks for the families of these women.

  2. It’s not the speed limit that is the problem. It’s the people that drive 80-90mph pulling trailers in a 70mph zone. I drive that road every day to work and see so many people in a hurry. They are on their phones not paying attention. We need law enforcement to pay more attention to these areas of concern.

  3. The speed limit between Marble Falls and Burnet on 281 needs to be lowered! Too much traffic and intersections making 70 mph unsafe!

  4. Highway 281 is becoming a death trap . The speed limits seem too high for the increase in traffic especially large truck traffic. Another :281 light needs to be placed at 281 and 1323 a death trap near Johnson city

  5. How many more will have to die before the speed limit is lowered on 281?? There are hundreds of trucks & trailers on that road & at 70 MPH there is no way to stop in time. The quarries behind those trucking industries are probably against lowering the speed limit but enough is enough!!

  6. the loss of lies from the flash floods is so devastating! The family’s, friends, and neighbors who have lost someone or are related to someone who did, our prayers mount. May the God of love and peace enter your hearts and dwell until this is only a memory. And then for the rest of your existence may you enjoy that love.

  7. We sat for almost 3 hours to get home to our home on Park Rd 4. We knew it must be horrible that we could get through. People try and beat that new light. I wonder how many accidents happened before to have them decide on the light. I wish ……these things would not happen.

    1. It would be great if those 5 folks that died horribly only had to wait 3 hours to get home! Prayers for all of those involved, especially families & the first responders & officers!

      1. I was not complaining about the time..I was saying we knew it was something bad for the road to be blocked for so long. Meanwhile I was praying for those involved. A lot of sadness lately. So many lives changed.
